Mining Stories
Silke Huysmans & Hannes Dereere [Belgium]
Documentary theater
60 minutes
In November 2015, a dam containing toxic mining waste collapses just a few kilometers from Silke Huysman's hometown in southern Brazil. A devastating flood of mud destroys several villages below the dam. In the days that follow, the toxic sludge flows into the Rio Doce river and eventually reaches the Atlantic Ocean. The ecological impact and environmental pollution are to this day among the most devastating ever recorded.
Silke Huysmans returns to her home town in Brazil to talk to those affected and to get an idea of the immense consequences of the disaster. Back in Belgium, she conducts interviews with experts. In »Mining Stories« she collects the recordings of her conversations on stage.
The documents bear witness to the effects of the disaster. Each of the speakers tells the story of the disaster from their own perspective, highlighting their own details and setting priorities. The result is a journey through a diverse collection of personal stories that address themes such as memory, resistance, religion and storytelling.
