Die Tagesshow – It´s called Fake News
Kevin Barz / Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe [Germany]
Performance
75 minutes
Riccardo Pallotta is an actor at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe. But he is also Constantin Schreiber, narrator of Germany's most important news program, the Tagesschau. With the help of deep fakes and artificial intelligence, he tricks his way into the broadcast, which has almost 10 million viewers every evening.
There is plenty to be learned: From climate change to the war in the Middle East, imperial machismo in Europe and Western obsession with prosperity, the future doesn't appear to be particularly bright. Sometimes you don't even want to turn on the news any more; there are too many apocalyptic scenarios bombarding us. But what if the person behind the screen, always looking so serious, only had good things to tell us? At least for one single transmission?
Deep fakes generate seemingly real images of Taylor Swift and the Pope, stealing truths and elections. Why don't we use this technology of digital deception to build our own truth? An attempt to deceive Germany's most reputable news format, allowing the audience to become accomplices live in the studio and create a different reality every evening. A plea for lies!
